Kontron ramps up 40G AdvancedTCA® migration program

4G LTE, WiMax and Femto network infrastructure market fueling drive for higher capacity open systems

Poway, CA, November 3, 2010 – Kontron today announced that its on-going program to migrate TEM clients to 40GbE from 10GbE AdvancedTCA® hardware platforms is in full expansion mode, a reflection of the wireless market’s race to prepare for the expected data usage explosion during the next four years.

Kontron is currently assisting its TEM clients in a multi-phase migration program that prepares them to develop immediately with 40G-ready AdvancedTCA® platforms. During the first phase, TEMs can fully deploy platforms as 10G systems and, when ready, initiate the second phase to field upgrade with 40G switching and other multicore processing capabilities.

This avoids the cost of fork lifting entire systems and ensures TEMs can both protect their hardware capital expenses and make the changeover to 40GbE from 10GbE in line with a timetable that meets all the technical, cost, and revenue needs of their carrier and service provider clients.

Kontron is available to discuss its long-term 40GbE AdvancedTCA® strategies and will be at the ATCA® Summit (November 9-11, Booth 311) and at Mobile World Congress (February 14-17, 2011, Booth 2A28 in Hall 2).

Additional Information
Among the different wireless technologies, 4G LTE is widely considered to be the next heir apparent, as 156 operators in 64 countries are currently investing in LTE networks, and have either made strong commitments to deploy LTE systems or are already engaged in trials, as confirmed in the October 2010 Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) report. Nearly 30 operators plan roll-outs before the end of 2010. By extension, the potential for the LTE network equipment market should hit $5 billion by 2014, as forecasted by the Dell 'Oro Group, and is only a mere ten percent of the wireless systems market taken up by 3G W-CDMA technology.

Service providers are investigating how to manage growth in mobile data usage – up to a possible 10,000% increase per-capita across a five-year span – despite only moderate revenue increases. To remain profitable in this new environment, new strategies are required.

Commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware platforms is one business model that telecom equipment vendors have depended on to secure a faster deployment of 3G wireless network applications for their carrier clients, and are looking to replicate this with 4G solutions. This will require higher system capacities than today’s 10GbE systems and, consequently, the only standards-based hardware offering 40GbE is AdvancedTCA®. The originator of the specification, PICMG® (PCI Industrial Computing Manufacturers Group), has been active to evolve AdvancedTCA® in lockstep with the IEEE HSSG working group to be compliant with the new 802.3ba Ethernet revision that introduces a range of new PHYs that extend Ethernet to 40Gbps and beyond.
